WHAT IS EX-PROOF (EXPLOSION PROOF) EQUIPMENT?
In many industrial sectors dealing with flammable, combustible, and explosive substances—such as petroleum, chemical plants, LPG, natural gas, coal mines, grain silos, sugar factories, and timber mills—explosive atmospheres can form during normal operations or during maintenance/malfunctions due to gases, dusts, or vapors. Sparks and arcs from standard electrical tools can ignite these environments, leading to catastrophic explosions. Therefore, electrical equipment used in these hazardous areas must be specialized and "Ex-proof."
As IST Safety, the Official Turkey Distributor of the world-renowned Wolf Safety brand, we provide advanced technology solutions that ensure maximum safety in these hazardous locations.
If primary precautions cannot mitigate the risk, secondary precautions—specifically Ex-proof electrical equipment—must be used. Wolf Safety’s ex-proof lighting systems are a critical component of these secondary safety measures.
An explosive atmosphere is formed when flammable gases, vapors, or dusts mix with air in explosive concentrations. Three elements must coexist for an explosion:
A. Explosive Substance: Flammable gas, vapor, or dust. B. Air (Oxygen) C. Energy: A spark or power source to ignite the explosion.
AREA AND GAS CLASSIFICATIONS IN HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS
Hazardous areas are classified based on the level of risk. Most of the world (excluding North America) follows the IEC Zone system. Wolf Safety products are specifically certified for the most demanding Zone 0 and Zone 20 environments.
Zone 0 (High Risk) An area where an explosive gas atmosphere is present continuously, for long periods, or frequently. Wolf’s Zone 0 compliant ex-proof torch models are the primary choice for these areas.
Zone 1 (Medium Risk) An area where an explosive gas atmosphere is likely to occur in normal operation occasionally.
Zone 2 (Low Risk) An area where an explosive gas atmosphere is not likely to occur in normal operation but, if it does occur, will persist for a short period only.
For dust environments, similar definitions apply as Zone 20, 21, and 22.
TEMPERATURE CLASSIFICATIONS
The maximum surface temperature of equipment ($T1$ to $T6$) is critical. Wolf Safety’s high-tech LED solutions meet the safest temperature classes, such as $T4$ and even $T6$, preventing the equipment from becoming an ignition source.
IP PROTECTION AGAINST FOREIGN OBJECTS
Wolf Safety products typically feature IP67 or IP68 protection ratings. This ensures the device is dust-tight (6) and protected against immersion in water (7/8). The ex-proof headlamp and handlamp models provided by IST meet these rigorous standards.
EX-PROOF LIGHTING SOLUTIONS FOR HAZARDOUS ATMOSPHERES
In hazardous atmospheres, both general area lighting and specific point-of-work lighting must be provided. IST’s Wolf Safety portfolio includes:
Ambient Lighting (Wolf LED Floodlites): High-performance LED systems for general area illumination. The Wolf LinkEx™ series features ATEX plugs and sockets, allowing for seamless series connection in Zones 1 and 2.
Task Lighting (Wolf Handlamps & Headlamps): Ultra-lightweight LED torches and headlamps designed for inspection and maintenance work.
Transformers (Wolf Transformers): Ex-proof units that convert mains voltage to a safe 24V level. Available in GRP or Stainless Steel enclosures.
Wolf Turbolite (Compressed Air Lighting): A world-famous, patented solution from Wolf that uses compressed air instead of electricity, completely eliminating the risk of electrical sparks.
ADVANTAGES OF LED TECHNOLOGY IN EX-PROOF LIGHTING
-
Broad Certification: Over 95% of ex-proof areas are covered by Zone 1 and 2 ATEX/IECEx certifications.
-
Durability: High resistance to drops and impacts with up to 60,000 hours of lifespan.
-
Energy Efficiency: Lower power consumption allows more lamps to be connected to a single source.
